A wonderfully unusual late 19th-century French retractable toothpick pendant, crafted in 18ct yellow gold and dating to c.1880–1900.
Designed as both a practical personal accessory and a miniature objet de vertu, the four-sided gold case conceals a tapered toothpick within. A small push lever slides along the casing to extend the pick to its full length, before retracting it completely and discreetly back inside. The restrained geometric form, stepped terminal details and beautifully compact mechanism give the piece an unexpectedly modern appearance despite its Victorian-era origins.
The fixed suspension bail bears two French eagle's-head guarantee marks for 18ct gold, with what appears to be a further maker's mark to the opposite side.
Excellent antique condition. The mechanism remains secure and functional, with a firm push lever to extend and retract the toothpick. When fully retracted, the pointed pick remains completely enclosed within the protective gold case. Light surface wear is present in areas, in keeping with age and use.
A rare and wonderfully eccentric piece of antique French goldwork, perfect worn as a pendant or suspended from an antique watch or guard chain.
